1) Centre Rejects Kuki-Zo Demand for Union Territory Status
Fresh talks between the Union Home Ministry and the Kuki-Zo insurgent groups in New Delhi focused on their core demand for the creation of a Union Territory with a legislative assembly for Kuki-Zo-inhabited areas. The Kuki National Organisation and United People’s Front insisted coexistence within Manipur was “not possible,” citing historical arguments that Kuki-Zo hill regions were never organically part of Manipur before 1947. However, MHA negotiator A.K. Mishra categorically ruled out territorial reorganisation, noting existing policy does not support new U.T.s and emphasising the need to consult other communities.
