1) SC orders removal of stray dogs from public spaces

The Supreme Court, expressing concern over the nationwide rise in dog-bite incidents, directed all States/UTs to immediately remove stray dogs from institutions such as schools, colleges, hospitals, sports complexes, bus stations, depots, and railway stations. The dogs are to be relocated only to authorised shelters after sterilisation and vaccination as per the ABC Rules, 2023. The Bench held that returning dogs to the same locations would defeat the purpose of securing institutional zones. Municipal bodies must survey institutions within two weeks and appoint nodal officers to ensure compliance. Hospitals must maintain anti-rabies stocks, while authorities must implement better waste management to prevent animal congregation. The Court also directed removal of stray cattle from highways. Non-compliance will attract accountability. The bench also asked the Animal Welfare Board of India to frame SOPs for prevention of dog bites. The order signals judicial pressure to balance public safety and animal welfare.
