SHARAVATI RIVER

1. Sharavati River

The Sharavati River is one of the most important west-flowing rivers of Karnataka. It originates in the Western Ghats and flows entirely within Karnataka before draining into the Arabian Sea. The river is famous for creating the spectacular Jog Falls, one of India’s highest waterfalls. Sharavati plays a vital role in hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, biodiversity conservation, and tourism. The river basin is covered with dense forests and supports rich flora and fauna. Due to its ecological and economic significance, the Sharavati River is considered a lifeline for several regions of Karnataka and an important natural resource.

2. Origin of the Sharavati River

The Sharavati River originates from Ambutheertha, a sacred place in Thirthahalli Taluk of Shivamogga (Shimoga) District in Karnataka. Situated in the Western Ghats, this region receives heavy rainfall, providing a steady water supply to the river. The river begins as a small stream and gradually gathers water from numerous tributaries as it flows westward. The origin area is known for its scenic beauty, dense forests, and ecological richness. The Western Ghats, recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot, contribute significantly to the river’s perennial flow, making Sharavati an important river system in southern India.

3. Sharavati River Flow and Course

Unlike many major Indian rivers that flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal, the Sharavati River flows westward towards the Arabian Sea. It travels entirely within Karnataka, covering approximately 128 kilometers before reaching the sea. The river passes through forested landscapes, valleys, and hilly terrain of the Western Ghats. Along its course, it supports agriculture, fisheries, and hydroelectric projects. The river basin receives abundant monsoon rainfall, ensuring a substantial water flow throughout the year. Its westward drainage pattern makes it one of Karnataka’s significant rivers contributing to the state’s ecology, economy, and water resources.
