CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ
1. Early Life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on 19 February 1630 at Shivneri Fort near Pune. His father, Shahaji Bhosale, was a Maratha noble and military leader, while his mother, Jijabai, deeply influenced his character through stories of bravery, justice, and devotion. From childhood, Shivaji displayed leadership qualities and a strong desire for self-rule. He received training in administration, warfare, horse riding, and weapon handling. Inspired by the ideal of Swarajya, or self-governance, he dreamed of establishing an independent kingdom free from foreign domination. His early experiences shaped him into one of India’s greatest warrior kings.
2. Establishment of Swarajya
The foundation of Swarajya began in 1646 when the young Shivaji captured Torna Fort at the age of sixteen. This marked the beginning of his mission to establish an independent Maratha state. Over time, he brought important forts such as Rajgad, Kondana, Purandar, Chakan, and Supa under his control. Through strategic planning, diplomacy, and military strength, he united various Maratha groups and expanded his territory. Shivaji’s vision was not merely territorial expansion but the creation of a just and secure state for his people. His efforts laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire and Hindavi Swarajya.
