BINDUSARA
1. Early Life and Accession
Bindusara was the son of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya and Queen Durdhara. Although the exact details of his birth are uncertain, historians believe he was born around 320 BCE. After Chandragupta Maurya abdicated the throne and embraced Jainism, Bindusara became the ruler of the Mauryan Empire around 297 BCE. He inherited one of the largest empires in ancient India and successfully continued his father’s policies. Bindusara is often described as a capable and determined ruler who ensured a smooth transfer of power. His accession marked the continuation of Mauryan strength and stability across the Indian subcontinent.
2. Ruler of a Vast Empire
Bindusara ruled an extensive empire that stretched from present-day Afghanistan in the west to Bengal in the east. The empire also extended from the Himalayan region in the north to much of the Deccan Plateau in the south. Managing such a vast territory required strong leadership and efficient administration. Bindusara preserved the unity of the Mauryan Empire and prevented major internal divisions. He strengthened central authority and maintained political stability throughout his reign. His ability to govern a large and diverse empire ensured that the Mauryan state remained one of the most powerful political entities in the ancient world.
