1. Birth and Introduction
Bahadur Shah Zafar was born on 24 October 1775 in Delhi. His full name was Abu Zafar Siraj-ud-din Muhammad Bahadur Shah. He became the last emperor of the Mughal Empire and is remembered not only as a ruler but also as a renowned poet and Sufi thinker. By the time he came to power, the Mughal Empire had greatly declined and much of India was under British influence. Despite limited political authority, Zafar was respected for his wisdom, culture, and literary achievements. His life symbolizes the final chapter of Mughal rule and the beginning of a new era in Indian history.
2. Accession to the Throne
Bahadur Shah Zafar ascended the Mughal throne on 28 September 1837. However, unlike earlier Mughal emperors, his authority was mostly confined to the Red Fort in Delhi. The British East India Company had become the dominant power in India, and the emperor had little real control over administration or military affairs. Although he held the title of emperor, he depended largely on British support. Despite these limitations, Zafar remained an important cultural and symbolic figure. His reign reflected the declining power of the Mughal dynasty and the growing influence of British colonial rule in India.
