1. Context of the Controversy

• U.S. President Donald Trump recently cited India’s election system while arguing for stricter voter-identification rules in the United States.
• He reportedly referred to India’s widespread use of voter identification and questioned why the U.S. should not insist on similar safeguards.
• His remarks were linked to support for the SAVE America Act, which seeks documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration and tighter identification requirements.
• The controversy arises because election administration, voter registration and citizenship verification operate very differently in India and the U.S.
