TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 153
1. How can India clean electoral rolls without excluding genuine voters?
Answer: Electoral-roll revision is necessary because duplicate, deceased or shifted voters can reduce the accuracy of elections. However, Karnataka's SIR has removed about 1.07 crore names, reducing the draft electorate to around 4.46 crore. At this scale, even a small error can affect many genuine voters. In my view, the principle should be “verify before exclusion.” Every deletion should have a clear reason, adequate notice and an easy claims-and-objections process. Migrants, tenants and vulnerable citizens need special assistance. Electoral integrity means both clean rolls and protection of universal adult franchise; one cannot be sacrificed for the other.
2. Should governments abandon major infrastructure projects when local communities strongly oppose them?
