Context

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has opened the online application process for the PM YASASVI Scheme for the financial year 2026–27. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities, enabling them to pursue quality education without financial barriers.

History of the Issue

The PM YASASVI (PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India) was launched in 2021–22 as a centrally funded umbrella scholarship scheme. It is administered by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to support students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Economically Backward Classes (EBCs), and Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNTs). Eligible students must have an annual family income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh and be enrolled in notified government or private institutions. The scheme provides financial support for both school education (Classes IX–XII) and higher education in premier institutions such as IITs, IIMs, NITs and AIIMS. Selection is merit-based, and 30% of the allotted seats are reserved for girl students.

PM YASASVI complements other scholarship programmes such as the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), the Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students, the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme, and Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship Schemes, collectively strengthening India's efforts to improve educational access and social mobility.

Q4. As a District Magistrate, what measures would you take to improve awareness and access to the PM YASASVI Scheme?

Answer: I would organise awareness campaigns in schools and colleges, involve teachers, local bodies and community organisations, and help students complete online applications. Special support camps in rural and remote areas would ensure that eligible students do not miss the scholarship because of lack of information or digital access.

Q5. Why is the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system important for scholarship programmes like PM YASASVI?

Answer: DBT transfers scholarship funds directly to beneficiaries, reducing delays, leakages and middlemen. It improves transparency, accountability and trust in government schemes. Timely financial support allows students to focus on their education instead of worrying about expenses, making welfare delivery more efficient and effective.
