Measuring only about 3 mm in width, it has a carmine-red carapace, a distinctive white dorsal spot and white markings on its claws. Genetic analysis of its mitochondrial DNA revealed 12.6–21.7% genetic divergence from other species of the same genus, confirming it as a distinct species. It has been named in honour of Dr. M. Ravichandran, former Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, for his contributions to the Deep Ocean Mission and marine research.
