New Species of Cyphostemma Discovered

A new plant species named Cyphostemma annamalaii was recently discovered in the Southern Eastern Ghats of India. The discovery was made by researchers from Annamalai University and published in the international taxonomic journal Phytotaxa in March 2026. The species belongs to the Vitaceae family, which includes grapevine-related plants.

The species was identified on Sanjeevi Hill in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, growing in tropical dry forests and open scrub vegetation. It is a herbaceous climbing plant with tuberous roots and distinctive trifoliate leaves. Unlike related species, its leaf pattern consistently remains in groups of three. The plant bears white or yellow flowers and yellow spherical fruits, distinguishing it from similar species that produce red fruits.

The discovery is scientifically significant because the Eastern Ghats are increasingly recognised as an important centre of endemic biodiversity and medicinal plant wealth. Preliminary observations suggest the species may possess anti-diabetic and antimicrobial properties, highlighting its possible pharmaceutical importance.
