Indigenous Diving Support Vessel (DSV) Nipun Handed Over to the Indian Navy

Introduction

The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, has recently delivered Nipun, India's second Indigenous Diving Support Vessel (DSV), to the Indian Navy. A highly specialised deep-sea support ship, Nipun is designed to undertake complex underwater diving, submarine rescue, search-and-rescue, and salvage operations. Its induction significantly strengthens India's underwater operational capability and supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

Background

India's expanding maritime interests and increasing submarine operations in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) created the need for dedicated diving support vessels. Earlier, India had limited indigenous capability for deep-sea rescue and often depended on external assistance during submarine emergencies. Following the induction of INS Nistar, Nipun has become the second vessel of its class, providing the Navy with enhanced underwater rescue and operational support.

Salient Features

Nipun is 118 metres long with a displacement of over 8,560 tonnes and can remain deployed at sea for up to 60 days without replenishment. It is equipped for deep-sea saturation diving up to 300 metres, advanced Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Dynamic Positioning Systems, and a flight deck for heavy helicopters. The vessel also serves as the mother ship for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV), enabling rapid rescue of personnel trapped in submarines. Designed according to Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) standards, it contains 75–80% indigenous content, including warship-grade steel supplied by SAIL, with contributions from nearly 120 MSMEs.

It improves operational readiness during submarine emergencies, strengthens anti-submarine support, and contributes to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions. With its formal delivery to the Indian Navy, Nipun has become an important addition to India's growing indigenous naval fleet and a major milestone in strengthening maritime security and underwater operational capability.
