Extreme Weather Grade Diesel (XWG): Indigenous Fuel for High-Altitude Military Operations
Introduction
The Indian Army has recently launched the Indigenous Extreme Weather Grade Diesel (XWG), a specially formulated fuel designed to ensure uninterrupted operation of military vehicles in extremely cold climates. Officially launched by Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth, the fuel has been jointly developed by the Indian Army, Indian Oil Corporation (IndianOil), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The initiative strengthens India's defence preparedness while advancing the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Background
Conventional diesel contains paraffin wax, which crystallises at sub-zero temperatures, causing fuel to thicken and block filters. This often prevents vehicles from starting in high-altitude regions such as Ladakh, Siachen, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. To overcome this operational challenge, India developed XWG Diesel within a record period of one year.
Salient Features
XWG Diesel remains fluid even at temperatures as low as –42°C (Pour Point), ensuring reliable engine performance under extreme winter conditions. It complies with BS-VI emission standards and meets BIS IS 1460:2025 specifications. As a drop-in fuel, it requires no engine modification, making it immediately compatible with existing military vehicles. With a flash point of around 50°C and optimised viscosity, it ensures efficient fuel atomisation and safe engine operation. BPCL has established a dedicated logistics chain from the Bina Refinery to strategic military depots, while the first consignment has been dispatched from IndianOil's Sangrur Terminal.

India views indigenous defence technologies as critical for enhancing operational readiness and reducing dependence on imported specialised fuels. XWG Diesel reflects the country's emphasis on self-reliance, technological innovation, and logistics resilience in border areas.
Strategic Significance and Current Status
The fuel will significantly improve mobility of tanks, infantry combat vehicles, and logistics convoys along the LAC and LoC, eliminating the need to keep engines running overnight or use unsafe external heating methods. Beyond defence, it also has potential applications for civilian transport in cold Himalayan regions. With its official launch, phased deployment to forward military formations has begun, marking another important milestone in India's indigenous defence capability.
