TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 131
1. How should India address recurring disputes over Cauvery water sharing?
Answer: Temporary improvement in rainfall can reduce tension, but it cannot solve the basic problem. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu both have genuine drinking-water and irrigation needs. India needs a transparent distress-sharing formula based on reservoir levels, rainfall, crop requirements and real-time data. Institutions like the Cauvery Water Management Authority should remain central so that neither State acts unilaterally. In my view, long-term solutions must also include crop diversification, efficient irrigation and better reservoir coordination. Cooperative federalism works only when States share both water and scarcity through predictable rules rather than political mobilisation.
2. What is the significance of the U.S. and Israel signalling restraint towards Iran?
