1. Dedicated Freight Corridor: infrastructure, logistics and economic competitiveness
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated important sections of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) connecting Uttar Pradesh with Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai, presenting the project as a major infrastructure milestone. The corridor is intended to separate freight movement from congested passenger railway routes, thereby increasing freight speeds, improving reliability and expanding carrying capacity. The economic logic is significant: inefficient logistics raise production costs, reduce export competitiveness and create supply-chain delays. Dedicated freight lines can allow passenger trains to operate more efficiently while moving industrial goods rapidly between manufacturing centres and ports. The Prime Minister also linked the project with the broader infrastructure expansion undertaken since 2014 and criticised opponents for allegedly finding fault with major development initiatives. Beyond political claims, the policy significance lies in integrating railways, ports, industrial corridors and multimodal logistics. The corridor’s long-term success will depend on utilisation, last-mile connectivity, affordable freight tariffs and integration with manufacturing clusters rather than infrastructure creation alone.
