1. Dedicated Freight Corridors Complete: Logistics Transformation and Rail Freight Revival
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), completing the 1,506-km route linking JNPT near Mumbai with Dadri near Delhi. Together with the already operational 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, India now has about 2,843 km of dedicated freight lines. Around 426 freight trains currently operate daily on the two corridors, with average speeds exceeding 50 kmph—roughly double those on the conventional network. The corridors separate freight from passenger traffic, lower transit time and costs, connect major ports with inland container depots and help decongest saturated trunk routes. The National Rail Plan seeks to raise rail’s freight share from roughly 27% to 45% by 2030. The broader logic is that lower logistics costs improve manufacturing and export competitiveness. The gist is that DFCs are not merely railway projects; they are strategic economic infrastructure linking ports, industrial clusters, logistics hubs and domestic markets while potentially shifting freight from road to more efficient rail transport.
