1. ISRO launches advanced Earth-imaging satellite EOS-05
ISRO successfully launched EOS-05, India’s first dedicated imaging satellite placed in geosynchronous orbit, aboard the GSLV-F17 from Sriharikota. The 2,367-kg satellite was injected into the intended orbit about 18 minutes after launch and is designed to provide near-real-time imagery, including coverage of regions that may be difficult to observe from lower-orbit satellites. Its applications include agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management and strategic surveillance. The successful mission is particularly significant after two earlier GSLV-related setbacks, demonstrating restored reliability of the launch system. The broader logic lies in strengthening India’s sovereign Earth-observation capabilities: timely satellite imagery improves disaster response, crop assessment, environmental governance and strategic decision-making. Geosynchronous positioning enables persistent observation of selected areas, supplementing lower-orbit remote-sensing satellites. The mission therefore combines technological self-reliance with developmental and security objectives. For India, sustained investment in indigenous launch vehicles and observation satellites also reduces dependence on external platforms for strategically important geospatial information.
