1. ISRO’s EOS-05: India Gets Its First Dedicated Geosynchronous Imaging Satellite
ISRO successfully launched EOS-05 aboard GSLV-F17, marking its first launch since January and an important recovery after several setbacks. EOS-05 is India’s first dedicated imaging satellite intended for geosynchronous orbit, around 36,000 km above Earth, where it can continuously observe the same region rather than revisit it periodically like low-Earth-orbit satellites. With a mission life of 10 years, it is designed for frequent observation of large areas for disaster monitoring, agriculture, forestry, weather systems and strategic surveillance. Weighing more than 2,360 kg, it is also the heaviest satellite yet carried by GSLV. The successful mission is especially significant because three of ISRO’s six missions during 2025-26 had failed to place satellites in intended orbits, leading to extended technical reviews. The gist is that persistent Earth observation can significantly strengthen India’s disaster response, resource monitoring, defence situational awareness and geospatial economy while restoring confidence in GSLV’s cryogenic technology.
2. India-China Border: Corps Commander Talks amid Tension in Arunachal Pradesh
India and China are expected to hold Corps Commander-level talks following reports of tension in the Taksing area of Upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. Lt General Girish Kalia of the Army’s III Corps is expected to engage his Chinese counterpart after several rounds of local commander-level discussions. The talks follow the August 25 meeting between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where both sides agreed to improve border-management mechanisms. Two new military hotlines are likely to be established at Army Command headquarters in Lucknow and Kolkata, and a new Border Personnel Meeting point is expected at Joshimath in Uttarakhand. These confidence-building measures come as Beijing and New Delhi attempt to rebuild ties damaged by the 2020 eastern Ladakh standoff. The gist is that normalisation with China cannot rest only on summit diplomacy; it requires institutionalised military communication, early resolution of local friction points and sustained peace along the entire Line of Actual Control.
