THE HINDU DATED 5TH NOVEMBER 2025.
1) EC launches Special Intensive Revision (SIR) amid opposition protests
The Election Commission initiated the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in nine States and three Union Territories, covering approximately 51 crore voters. Booth-level officers began door-to-door distribution of partially filled unique enumeration forms. While the BJP welcomed the exercise as a transparency measure, major regional parties strongly objected. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a rally alleging “silent, invisible rigging”, warning of voter disenfranchisement. Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK moved the Supreme Court terming the exercise “arbitrary and unreasonable”, likely to remove legitimate voters. Opposition parties allege that the SIR may disproportionately affect minorities and migrants. The EC maintains that the large-scale revision is necessary to ensure clean rolls, and BLOs will revisit homes multiple times to collect forms. The issue has ignited a wider debate on electoral rights, bureaucratic burden, and political motives behind timing.
