1. Cauvery situation improves, but long-term water-sharing issues remain

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the Cauvery water situation had improved following better rainfall and reservoir inflows, reducing immediate pressure over releases to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka nevertheless maintained that water releases must remain consistent with drinking-water needs and reservoir conditions. The State also reiterated that the Mekedatu project is important for finding a long-term solution to recurring disputes. At the same time, the Chief Minister appealed for withdrawal of the proposed August 13 bandh, signalling an attempt to prevent the issue from escalating into wider political confrontation. The logic is that temporary improvement in rainfall cannot substitute for durable interstate water management. Karnataka’s stand stresses balancing legal obligations with local requirements, while Tamil Nadu continues to depend on releases for irrigation. The larger lesson is that Cauvery disputes require transparent hydrological data, agreed distress-sharing mechanisms, efficient irrigation and institutional cooperation rather than repeated mobilisation whenever monsoon conditions change.
