1. Extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala: floods, landslides and disaster preparedness

Extremely heavy rain lashed Kerala, killing at least eight people and triggering landslides, flash floods and widespread damage, especially in Idukki and Kottayam. Authorities opened shutters of several dams as river levels rose sharply, while relief camps were established in vulnerable districts. The India Meteorological Department warned of continued heavy rainfall, requiring evacuation from landslide-prone areas and close monitoring of reservoirs. The immediate logic of disaster management is to prioritise early warning, evacuation, rescue and restoration of essential services. However, recurring extreme rainfall also raises longer-term questions about land-use practices, construction on unstable slopes, drainage and settlement expansion in ecologically fragile regions. Kerala’s experience shows that climate-related disasters cannot be managed only through post-event relief. The appropriate policy stand is to combine scientific hazard mapping, resilient infrastructure, controlled development, community preparedness and transparent dam-management protocols. Climate adaptation must become a regular component of development planning in the Western Ghats and adjoining regions.
