The Supreme Court has held that proper menstrual hygiene management in schools is integral to girls’ right to life and dignity under Article 21. The judgment notes that lack of access to toilets, water and sanitary napkins leads to stigma, absenteeism and even dropout, effectively denying girls equal education. It directs States and Union Territories to ensure functional toilets, disposal mechanisms and free or affordable sanitary products in all schools. The Court’s logic is that the right to education cannot be delinked from the conditions that make schooling physically and psychologically possible.
