1. Supreme Court Pauses Aravalli Ruling and Moots New Expert Panel
The Supreme Court’s decision to keep in abeyance its earlier ruling on the definition of the Aravalli range marks a significant intervention in environmental jurisprudence. The November 20 judgment had upheld a government expert panel’s restrictive definition, limiting Aravallis to hills above 100 metres and closely clustered formations. This raised public concern that vast stretches of ecologically sensitive terrain would lose protection, facilitating mining and degradation.
