1. Election Commission’s Relaxation on ‘Unmapped’ Voters in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India relaxed its earlier instruction requiring hearings for “unmapped” voters in West Bengal whose names or ancestral links appeared in the 2002 electoral rolls. The move followed sharp criticism that elderly, disabled, and ailing voters were being summoned to distant camps during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The logic behind the relaxation is administrative pragmatism—recognising legacy electoral records as a sufficient basis for verification while avoiding undue hardship. Politically, the Trinamool Congress framed the exercise as voter intimidation, alleging stress-induced deaths and coercive field practices.
