1. Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025
The Assam government introduced a stringent anti-polygamy Bill proposing imprisonment up to seven years and heavy fines for individuals entering or concealing a second marriage while the first is legally valid. The law applies across the State, except in Sixth Schedule areas and among Scheduled Tribes whose customary laws allow multiple marriages. It expands liability to parents, guardians, village heads, qazis and priests who knowingly support such marriages. The Bill aims to protect women from hardship and “streamline society”, while also barring convicted individuals from government jobs, welfare benefits, and elections.
