THE HINDU DATED 05TH FABRUARY 2026.

1.     President’s rule ends in Manipur; new CM sworn in

After months of President’s rule imposed amid ethnic violence, Manipur finally saw a return to elected government as BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in Chief Minister. Two Deputy Chief Ministers, Nemcha Kipgen from the Kuki-Zo community and Losii Dikho from the Naga People’s Front, joined the council, clearly designed as a power-sharing formula between valley Meiteis and hill groups. The Governor’s address and the BJP’s central leadership emphasised peace, rehabilitation and development as the new government’s priorities. Militant groups demanding separate administration for Kuki-Zo areas have warned their leaders against joining the government, underlining how fragile public trust remains. The political logic is to use a more inclusive cabinet to rebuild confidence, restart administration and resume welfare schemes stalled under Central rule. The gist: constitutional governance is back in Manipur, but its legitimacy will depend on whether the new team can bridge deep social divides and contain sporadic violence.
