1. Southwest Monsoon Ends With 12% Deficit — Lowest Rainfall in Over a Decade
India’s 2026 southwest monsoon ended with a rainfall deficit of about 12.6%, the lowest seasonal rainfall in more than a decade. The India Meteorological Department linked the weak season partly to El Niño, which generally suppresses Indian monsoon rainfall. Regional disparities were sharper: east and northeast India recorded their driest monsoon since 1901, while the southern peninsula experienced its fourth-lowest rainfall since 1901. Reservoir storage across 178 monitored reservoirs was only about 70% of capacity, below the ten-year average of 76.62%. The implications extend to kharif production, irrigation, drinking water, hydropower and food inflation. Climate variability also demonstrates why an all-India average can conceal severe regional stress. Gist: India needs climate-resilient agriculture, efficient irrigation, groundwater recharge, reservoir management and improved seasonal forecasting because monsoon security increasingly depends on managing both rainfall quantity and its spatial-temporal distribution.
2. INDIA Bloc Campaign Against ECI and SIR — Electoral-Roll Controversy Continues
The INDIA bloc announced a nationwide campaign against the Election Commission and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have alleged that SIR procedures risk wrongful deletion of legitimate voters and have demanded greater transparency concerning additions and removals. These remain political allegations; they do not by themselves establish electoral manipulation. The Election Commission has defended the revision exercise while also making procedural changes, including extending SIR schedules in Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya. The constitutional tension involves two legitimate objectives: preventing duplicate, deceased or otherwise ineligible entries and ensuring that qualified citizens are not disenfranchised. Article 324 gives the ECI supervisory authority over elections, while Article 326 establishes adult suffrage subject to law. Gist: the legitimacy of electoral-roll revision depends not simply on removing questionable entries but on due process—individual notice, evidence-based verification, accessible appeals, transparent databases and uniform rules. Electoral integrity requires both accuracy and inclusion, with political disputes ultimately tested through evidence and lawful institutional mechanisms.
