1.      Quad initiatives to counter China in the Indo-Pacific

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi produced new initiatives on energy security, critical minerals, maritime surveillance and port infrastructure. India, the US, Japan and Australia agreed to launch an Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Corporation, expand maritime domain awareness and develop port infrastructure in Fiji. The logic is strategic: China’s assertiveness in the East China Sea and South China Sea, combined with global supply-chain disruptions from the West Asia conflict, has made maritime security and economic resilience urgent. The Quad’s stand is that destabilising or coercive actions threatening peace, navigation and overflight must be opposed. India also linked the discussion to energy, fertiliser and critical-mineral availability. The gist is that the Quad is moving beyond diplomatic statements towards practical cooperation in ports, surveillance, fuel security and rare-earth supply chains.
