1. India–China Boundary Talks: Doval Heads to Beijing Ahead of BRICS Summit
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is travelling to Beijing for the 25th round of Special Representative-level talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the long-running boundary dispute, ahead of a possible visit by President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit. The two countries have been gradually attempting to repair relations after the 2020–24 military standoff along the Line of Actual Control. India continues to insist that peace and tranquillity on the border are prerequisites for normal bilateral relations, while China has called for respect for each other’s “core interests”. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also underlined that India should engage China confidently while simultaneously strengthening domestic manufacturing and economic capability. The logic is therefore deterrence plus engagement: normalisation cannot precede border stability, but permanent confrontation is economically costly. The gist is that India-China ties will improve sustainably only if boundary management, military disengagement and economic engagement advance together without compromising territorial positions.
