1. INDIA Bloc Adopts Motion to Impeach Chief Election Commissioner
The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) adopted a symbolic motion seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition leaders levelled six charges, including alleged electoral irregularities, misuse of the Special Intensive Revision process and disenfranchisement of eligible voters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Election Commission's functioning, while Rahul Gandhi warned that officials involved in electoral wrongdoing could face legal consequences. The motion reflects growing political confrontation over electoral transparency and institutional independence. Under Article 324(5) of the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only in the same manner and on the same grounds as a Supreme Court judge. Therefore, a symbolic motion at an opposition gathering does not itself initiate or complete constitutional removal proceedings. Allegations must be supported by evidence and examined through lawful processes. Gist: Electoral accountability is essential, but institutional independence and constitutional safeguards must be preserved. Political allegations cannot substitute for established legal findings.
