THE INDUS RIVER SYSTEM
1. Indus River
The Indus River is one of the longest and oldest rivers in the world and forms the backbone of the Indus River System. It originates near the Bokhar Chu Glacier in the Kailash Range of Tibet, close to Lake Mansarovar. The river flows through Tibet, Ladakh in India, and Pakistan before emptying into the Arabian Sea. With a length of about 3,180 km, it supports agriculture, settlements, industries, and ecosystems across South Asia. The Indus was the cradle of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and remains a vital source of irrigation, drinking water, hydropower, and economic development.
