1. Bhakra Dam
Bhakra Dam is one of India's most important multipurpose river valley projects. It is built across the Sutlej River near Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. Construction began shortly after Independence, and the dam was dedicated to the nation in 1963. It is a concrete gravity dam with a height of about 226 metres, making it one of the tallest dams in India. The reservoir created by the dam is known as Gobind Sagar Lake.
The dam supplies irrigation water to Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, transforming large areas of semi-arid land into productive agricultural regions. It played a vital role in supporting the Green Revolution by ensuring reliable water supplies for wheat and rice cultivation. Bhakra Dam also generates substantial hydroelectric power through its powerhouses, supplying electricity to several northern states.
