1. Sundarbans Forest
The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world and is located in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta in southern West Bengal. Spread over about 9,630 sq km in India and Bangladesh, the Indian portion covers approximately 4,200 sq km. It is classified as a tropical mangrove forest and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The forest is characterized by tidal waterways, mudflats, estuaries, and salt-tolerant mangrove species such as Sundari, from which the forest derives its name. It is home to the famous Bengal Tiger, which has adapted to swimming in saline waters. Other species include estuarine crocodiles, fishing cats, spotted deer, and numerous migratory birds.
The Sundarbans act as a natural barrier against cyclones, storm surges, and coastal erosion. It supports fisheries, honey collection, and eco-tourism. The mangroves absorb carbon dioxide and contribute significantly to climate regulation.
Its ecological importance extends beyond India, serving as a biodiversity hotspot and a crucial defense system for millions living along the Bay of Bengal coast.
