1. Yangtze River (Chang Jiang)

The Yangtze River, also known as Chang Jiang, is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest river in the world, with a length of about 6,300 km. It originates in the Tanggula Mountains of the Tibetan Plateau and flows eastward across China before emptying into the East China Sea near Shanghai. Often called the “Golden Waterway,” it is crucial for transportation, irrigation, fishing, and hydroelectric power generation. The famous Three Gorges Dam is built on this river. Major tributaries include the Jinsha, Han, Jialing, and Wu rivers. It is vital to China’s economy and agriculture.

2. Yellow River (Huang He)

The Yellow River, or Huang He, is the second-longest river in China and the sixth-longest in Asia, stretching about 5,464 km. It originates in the Bayan Har Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau and flows into the Bohai Sea. The river is called the “Cradle of Chinese Civilization” because many early Chinese settlements developed along its banks. It carries large amounts of yellow silt (loess), giving the river its name. Due to frequent floods, it is also known as “China’s Sorrow.” The river supports agriculture, irrigation, hydropower generation, and economic activities in northern China.

3. Mekong River

The Mekong River is one of Asia’s major international rivers, stretching approximately 4,350 km. It originates on the Tibetan Plateau and flows through six countries: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam before entering the South China Sea. Known as the “River of Nine Dragons” in Vietnam, it forms the fertile Mekong Delta. The river is essential for agriculture, fisheries, transportation, biodiversity, and hydropower production. Important tributaries include the Nam Ou, Tonle Sap, and Nam Ngum rivers. Millions of people depend on the Mekong for food, livelihoods, and economic development throughout Southeast Asia.
