1. Birth and Childhood
Razia Sultana was born around 1205 CE in Delhi. She was the daughter of Sultan Iltutmish, one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. From childhood, Razia displayed intelligence, courage, and a strong interest in administration. Unlike many royal women of her time, she received an excellent education and training in governance, military affairs, and public administration. Her father recognized her exceptional abilities and often involved her in state matters. Razia’s confidence, leadership skills, and dedication distinguished her from her siblings, preparing her for a remarkable role in Indian history as a pioneering female ruler.
2. Chosen as Heir
Sultan Iltutmish believed that Razia was more capable than his sons and therefore selected her as his successor. He openly declared her his heir, praising her intelligence, judgment, and administrative abilities. However, many nobles opposed the idea because they believed a woman should not rule the Sultanate. After Iltutmish’s death in 1236 CE, the nobles initially ignored his wishes and placed another ruler on the throne. Nevertheless, Razia’s popularity and competence eventually gained public support. Her father’s decision demonstrated his confidence in her abilities and highlighted her exceptional qualities as a future ruler.
