1. Birth and Early Life
Rani Lakshmi Bai was born on 19 November 1828 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Her childhood name was Manikarnika, and she was affectionately called Manu. Her father, Moropant Tambe, worked in the court of Peshwa Baji Rao II. From an early age, Manu received training in horse riding, sword fighting, archery, and military skills, which was unusual for girls of her time. She was intelligent, courageous, and independent in nature. These qualities helped shape her into a strong leader and warrior. Her early upbringing played a significant role in preparing her for future challenges and responsibilities.
2. Marriage and Life in Jhansi
Manikarnika married Maharaja Gangadhar Rao, the ruler of Jhansi, and after marriage she became known as Rani Lakshmi Bai. As the queen of Jhansi, she actively participated in administrative matters and cared deeply for her subjects. The couple had a son, but he died in infancy. Later, they adopted a boy named Damodar Rao as their heir. Rani Lakshmi Bai remained devoted to her kingdom and worked for its welfare. Her intelligence, leadership abilities, and concern for her people earned her respect among the citizens of Jhansi and strengthened her position as a capable ruler.
