1. Early Life and Kingdom of Porus

Porus, also known as Paurava, was a powerful ruler of the Paurava Kingdom located in the Punjab region near the Jhelum (Hydaspes) River. He lived during the 4th century BCE and was a contemporary of Alexander the Great. His capital is believed to have been Purushapura, near present-day Peshawar. Porus was known for his courage, independence, and strong leadership. He ruled a prosperous kingdom with a disciplined army and maintained authority over his territory. His reputation as a brave warrior king spread throughout the region, making him one of the most respected rulers of ancient northwestern India.

2. The Battle of Hydaspes (326 BCE)

The Battle of Hydaspes was fought in 326 BCE between Porus and Alexander the Great on the banks of the Hydaspes River, now known as the Jhelum River. Alexander crossed the river during the night to surprise Porus and gain a strategic advantage. Despite facing one of the most powerful armies of the ancient world, Porus fought courageously using war elephants, cavalry, infantry, and chariots. The battle was intense and lasted for many hours. Although Porus was eventually defeated, he displayed exceptional bravery and determination, earning admiration from both his soldiers and even his victorious opponent, Alexander.
