1. Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE)
The Mauryan Empire was the first large, centralized empire in ancient India, founded by Chandragupta Maurya in 322 BCE with the guidance of Kautilya (Chanakya). Its capital was Pataliputra, present-day Patna. At its peak, the empire stretched from Afghanistan in the west to Bengal in the east and extended deep into the Deccan. The Mauryan rulers established an efficient administrative system, a strong military, and a prosperous economy. The empire reached its greatest glory under Ashoka, who promoted peace and moral governance after the Kalinga War. The Mauryan period marks a significant phase in Indian political history.
