MAURYA DYNASTY
1. Maurya Dynasty
The Maurya Dynasty was one of the greatest and most powerful empires in ancient Indian history. Founded by Chandragupta Maurya around 322 BCE, it marked the beginning of political unity over a large part of the Indian subcontinent. The dynasty ruled from its capital at Pataliputra and expanded its influence through strong administration, military power, and efficient governance. The Mauryan period is particularly remembered for rulers like Chandragupta Maurya, Bindusara, and Ashoka the Great. The empire promoted trade, agriculture, law, and public welfare. It declined after Ashoka’s successors, ending with Brihadratha in 185 BCE.
2. Chandragupta Maurya (322–298 BCE)
Chandragupta Maurya was the founder of the Maurya Empire and one of India’s most remarkable rulers. Guided by his mentor Chanakya (Kautilya), he overthrew the Nanda Dynasty and established a vast empire centered in Magadha. Chandragupta defeated the Greek ruler Seleucus Nicator, strengthening his position in northwestern India. A marriage alliance with Seleucus further improved diplomatic relations. He built a strong administrative system, maintained a large army, and promoted economic growth. His reign laid the foundation for one of the largest empires in Indian history. Chandragupta is also associated with Jainism in his later life.
