MAJOR SPACE AGENCIES OF THE WORLD — ORGANISATIONS, MISSIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
1. Introduction
- National and multinational space agencies develop satellites, launch vehicles, human-spaceflight systems, planetary missions and space-based applications.
- Their work supports communication, navigation, weather forecasting, Earth observation, disaster management, defence, scientific research and exploration.
- International cooperation has become increasingly important because major missions often involve instruments, launch services and scientific teams from several countries.
2. NASA — United States
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created in 1958 and began operations on 1 October 1958.
- It is the principal civilian space agency of the United States.
- Major achievements include the Apollo Moon landings, Space Shuttle, Hubble Space Telescope, Mars rovers, James Webb Space Telescope and Artemis programme.
- NASA also conducts extensive aeronautics, Earth-science and planetary research. (NASA)
3. ISRO — India
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was established on 15 August 1969, succeeding INCOSPAR.
- Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is regarded as the founding father of India’s space programme.
- ISRO develops satellites, launch vehicles and applications for communication, navigation, weather, remote sensing and scientific exploration. (ISRO)
- Major achievements include Chandrayaan-1, Mars Orbiter Mission, Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1, PSLV and GSLV/LVM3.
4. European Space Agency — Europe
- The European Space Agency (ESA) was created in 1975 by combining earlier European space organisations.
- It is an intergovernmental agency coordinating the resources of European countries for space science and technology. (European Space Agency)
- Its programmes cover Earth observation, navigation, telecommunications, astronomy, launch vehicles and human spaceflight.
- Slovenia became ESA’s 23rd Member State in 2025. (European Space Agency)
5. Roscosmos — Russia
- Roscosmos is the principal state organisation responsible for Russia’s civil space programme.
- Russia inherited the extensive space capabilities of the former Soviet Union, which achieved milestones such as Sputnik-1, the first artificial satellite, and Yuri Gagarin’s first human spaceflight.
- Roscosmos operates satellites, launch vehicles, cosmonaut programmes and participates in international space-station activities.
6. CNSA — China
- The China National Space Administration (CNSA) was established in 1993.
- China has developed independent capabilities in launch vehicles, human spaceflight, lunar exploration and planetary science.
- Important programmes include the Chang’e lunar missions, Tianwen Mars programme and Tiangong space station.
- China became the first country to achieve a soft landing on the far side of the Moon through Chang’e-4.
7. JAXA — Japan
- The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) was established in October 2003 by merging three Japanese aerospace organisations. (JAXA)
- Its work includes satellites, launch vehicles, astronomy, Earth observation and planetary exploration.
- JAXA is particularly noted for the Hayabusa and Hayabusa2 asteroid sample-return missions.
8. Canadian Space Agency — Canada
- The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was established in March 1989 to manage Canada’s civilian space activities. (Canadian Space Agency)
- Canada is internationally recognised for space robotics, especially the Canadarm systems used in human spaceflight.
- CSA also participates in Earth observation, satellite communications, space science and international exploration programmes.
9. DLR and UK Space Agency
- Germany’s DLR (German Aerospace Center) conducts extensive research in space, aeronautics, energy, transport and Earth observation.
- The UK Space Agency, established in 2010, coordinates the United Kingdom’s civil space policy and supports satellite technology, science, commercial space activity and international cooperation.
- Both countries also participate extensively in programmes conducted through ESA.
10. Importance and India’s International Cooperation
- Modern space exploration increasingly depends on international collaboration, because missions require enormous scientific, technological and financial resources.
- India cooperates with NASA, ESA, JAXA, CNES and other international partners in Earth observation, planetary science and human spaceflight.
- The joint NASA–ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is a major example of such cooperation.
- Space agencies today are also dealing with emerging issues such as space debris, planetary defence, commercial spaceflight, lunar resources and responsible use of outer space.
