COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS — COMPONENTS, MEMORY, GENERATIONS AND INTERNET
1. Meaning of a Computer
- A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data as input, processes it according to instructions, stores information and produces output.
- Its basic functioning can be represented as Input → Processing → Output → Storage.
- NIOS identifies input devices, output devices, memory and the Central Processing Unit (CPU) as the four major functional components of a computer. (NIOS)
2. Hardware and Software
- Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer that can be seen and touched, such as the keyboard, monitor, processor and storage devices.
- Software consists of programs, operating systems and instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
- System software includes operating systems, while application software includes word processors, spreadsheets, browsers and similar programs. (NIOS)
3. Input Devices
- Input devices are used to enter data and instructions into a computer.
- Common examples include keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone, webcam, touchscreen and barcode reader.
- A scanner converts printed documents or images into digital form.
- Modern devices may also use biometric sensors, voice input and digital cameras.
4. Central Processing Unit
- The CPU is often called the “brain of the computer” because it controls and processes instructions.
- It broadly contains the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), Control Unit and registers.
- The ALU performs arithmetic and logical operations, while the Control Unit coordinates the activities of different computer components.
- Modern CPUs contain billions of transistors integrated into compact semiconductor chips.
5. Output Devices
- Output devices present processed information to the user.
- Common examples include monitor, printer, speakers, projector and plotter.
- A monitor produces soft-copy output, while printers provide hard-copy output.
- NIOS describes output devices as devices that receive processed information from the CPU and present it in the required form. (NIOS)
6. Computer Memory
- Computer memory is broadly classified into primary memory and secondary storage.
- Primary memory includes RAM and ROM; RAM is generally volatile, while ROM retains information without continuous power.
- Secondary storage includes hard disks, solid-state drives, optical discs and other persistent storage devices.
- Government IT syllabi similarly distinguish RAM, ROM and secondary storage such as magnetic and optical disks. (MeitY)
7. Bit, Byte and Storage Units
- A bit is the smallest unit of digital information and can represent either 0 or 1.
- Eight bits make one byte.
- Larger units include kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte and terabyte.
- Computers ultimately represent text, images, sound and instructions through combinations of binary digits.
8. Generations of Computers
- The conventional classification describes the first generation as using vacuum tubes, the second generation as using transistors and the third generation as using integrated circuits.
- The fourth generation began with microprocessor-based computers and enabled personal computing.
- The commonly used “generation” classification is primarily educational; modern computing has evolved continuously beyond these simple categories.
- Therefore, rigid dates assigned to each generation may vary among textbooks.
9. Charles Babbage and Development of Computing
- Charles Babbage is popularly called the “Father of the Computer” because of his designs for the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine.
- His Analytical Engine anticipated ideas such as programmable instructions, memory and processing.
- Later developments in electronics, semiconductors and microprocessors transformed these concepts into modern digital computers.
10. Internet and Importance of Computers
- The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that communicate through standard networking protocols.
- The World Wide Web (WWW) is one service operating over the Internet; therefore, the Internet and WWW are not identical.
- Common Internet applications include email, web browsing, cloud services, online banking, e-governance and digital education. (MeitY)
- Computers today are essential in education, science, healthcare, business, communication, governance, banking and entertainment.
- Their benefits must be accompanied by awareness of cybersecurity, data privacy, digital literacy and responsible technology use.
