1. Birth and Early Life
Maharaja Ranjit Singh was born on 13 November 1780 in Gujranwala, Punjab (now in Pakistan). He was the son of Maha Singh, the leader of the Sukerchakia Misl, and Raj Kaur. Ranjit Singh lost his parents at a young age and faced many hardships during childhood. Despite suffering from smallpox, which affected his eyesight, he displayed remarkable courage, intelligence, and leadership qualities. From an early age, he learned military skills and statecraft. At the age of twelve, he assumed responsibility for his father’s territories and began his journey toward becoming the greatest Sikh ruler.
2. Leader of the Sukerchakia Misl
Ranjit Singh became the leader of the Sukerchakia Misl after his father’s death. During this period, Punjab was divided among several Sikh misls, which often competed with one another. Ranjit Singh worked to unite these groups through diplomacy, alliances, and military strength. He understood that unity was essential to protect Punjab from foreign invasions and internal conflicts. His leadership, courage, and political wisdom helped him gain the support of many Sikh chiefs. By gradually bringing different territories under his control, he laid the foundation for a strong and unified Sikh state in Punjab.
