1. Forest Distribution in the World
Forest distribution across the world depends mainly on climate, relief, soil, and rainfall. Forests cover about 31% of Earth’s land area and are unevenly distributed. Tropical evergreen forests occur near the Equator, coniferous forests in high latitudes, temperate deciduous forests in mid-latitudes, Mediterranean forests in western continental margins, and montane forests in mountainous regions. These forests support biodiversity, regulate climate, prevent soil erosion, and maintain ecological balance. Human activities, urbanization, and deforestation have altered natural forest distribution in many regions. Understanding forest distribution is important for conservation, sustainable resource management, and environmental protection.
2. Tropical Evergreen Forests
Tropical evergreen forests, also known as tropical rainforests, are found in warm and humid regions near the Equator, generally between 10°N and 10°S latitudes. They receive heavy rainfall exceeding 200 cm annually and remain green throughout the year. These forests are dense, multi-layered, and rich in biodiversity. Major regions include the Amazon Basin, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia. Common vegetation includes tall broad-leaved trees, lianas, palms, bamboo, and epiphytes. They provide habitat for numerous species such as elephants, monkeys, tigers, and birds. Tropical evergreen forests regulate climate, absorb carbon dioxide, and maintain the global water cycle.
3. Coniferous Forests (Taiga/Boreal Forests)
Coniferous forests, also called Taiga or Boreal forests, are found in sub-polar regions between 50°N and 70°N latitudes across North America, Europe, and Asia. They experience long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Trees are evergreen, cone-bearing, and possess needle-shaped leaves that reduce water loss. Common species include pine, spruce, fir, cedar, and hemlock. These forests form the largest terrestrial biome on Earth and play a significant role in carbon storage. Wildlife includes moose, bears, lynx, foxes, and reindeer. Coniferous forests are important sources of timber, paper pulp, and ecological stability.
4. Temperate Deciduous Forests
Temperate deciduous forests occur mainly between 30° and 50° latitudes in Eastern North America, Europe, and East Asia. These forests experience moderate rainfall and four distinct seasons. Trees shed their leaves during autumn to conserve water and survive winter conditions. Common tree species include oak, maple, beech, birch, ash, and elm. The soils are fertile due to decomposed leaf litter, supporting diverse plant and animal life. Wildlife includes deer, bears, foxes, rabbits, and numerous bird species. Temperate deciduous forests are valuable for timber production, biodiversity conservation, and maintaining regional ecological balance and soil fertility.
5. Mediterranean Forests
Mediterranean forests are found in regions characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Major locations include the Mediterranean Basin, California, Central Chile, Cape Region of South Africa, and South-West Australia. Vegetation consists mainly of evergreen, sclerophyllous trees and shrubs with thick, leathery leaves adapted to drought. Common plants include olive, cork oak, stone pine, rosemary, lavender, and myrtle. These forests often experience natural wildfires, which help regeneration. Wildlife includes deer, wild goats, foxes, tortoises, and birds. Mediterranean forests are important for biodiversity, agriculture, tourism, and environmental sustainability in semi-arid regions.
6. Montane (Mountain) Forests
Montane forests grow on mountain slopes and vary significantly with altitude. Found in regions such as the Himalayas, Alps, Andes, Rockies, East African Highlands, and Australian Mountains, these forests experience changing temperature and rainfall conditions with elevation. Lower slopes may support broad-leaved forests, while higher elevations contain coniferous forests and alpine meadows. Common trees include pine, fir, spruce, deodar, oak, and rhododendron. Wildlife includes snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, red pandas, mountain goats, and numerous birds. Montane forests protect watersheds, prevent soil erosion, support biodiversity, and play a crucial role in mountain ecosystems and livelihoods.
7. Mediterranean Basin Region
The Mediterranean Basin is the largest and most famous Mediterranean forest region in the world. It surrounds the Mediterranean Sea and includes countries such as Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters. Vegetation consists of evergreen shrubs, olive trees, cork oaks, and aromatic herbs. The area is known for its high biodiversity and many endemic species. Agriculture, tourism, and forestry are major economic activities. However, urbanization, forest fires, and climate change pose significant threats to this unique ecosystem.
8. Altitudinal Zonation in Montane Forests
Altitudinal zonation refers to the gradual change in vegetation and climate with increasing height in mountainous areas. Lower montane zones contain tropical or subtropical forests, followed by temperate broad-leaved forests at moderate elevations. Higher altitudes support coniferous forests of pine, fir, and spruce. Beyond the tree line lies the alpine zone, dominated by grasses, mosses, and lichens. Temperature decreases and environmental conditions become harsher with altitude. This vertical arrangement creates diverse habitats within a small area. Altitudinal zonation is important for biodiversity conservation, ecological studies, watershed protection, and understanding mountain ecosystem dynamics.
