The World Obesity Atlas 2026, released by the World Obesity Federation on World Obesity Day, highlights the growing global health challenge posed by childhood overweight and obesity. For the first time in history, the number of children affected by obesity worldwide has exceeded the number of underweight children, reflecting a major shift in global nutritional trends.
According to the report, around 20.7% of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years globally are overweight or obese, compared to 14.6% in 2010. By 2040, this number is projected to reach 507 million children, indicating a rapid rise in obesity across both developed and developing countries. The report also warns that obesity could impose a significant economic burden, potentially affecting 3.29% of global GDP by 2060 due to healthcare costs and productivity losses.
