India is currently facing concerns of a potential LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) shortage due to structural imbalances between rising demand, import dependence, and inadequate storage infrastructure. Over the past decade, LPG consumption has increased sharply, primarily driven by welfare initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which expanded clean cooking access to nearly 10 crore additional households. As a result, India has become the world’s second-largest LPG consumer, with monthly consumption around 3 million tonnes.
However, this surge in demand has not been matched by proportional investments in domestic production or strategic storage capacity. Nearly 60% of LPG demand is met through imports, and over 85% of these imports transit through the strategically vulnerable Strait of Hormuz, making supplies highly sensitive to geopolitical disruptions. Unlike crude oil, where India maintains strategic reserves equivalent to about two months of consumption, LPG storage capacity is critically low—barely sufficient for less than two days of consumption.
