Vikram-1, developed by Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace, is set to become India’s first privately built orbital launch vehicle, with a proposed launch around June 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota. Unlike sub-orbital rockets, Vikram-1 is capable of placing satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Salient Features: It is a four-stage rocket, with the first three stages using solid fuel and the upper stage using a liquid hypergolic engine for precise orbital insertion. It can carry up to 480 kg payload to LEO and around 290 kg to Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). The rocket uses carbon-composite materials and incorporates 3D-printed engines, reducing weight, cost, and manufacturing time. The Kalam series powers solid stages, while the Raman engine powers the liquid stage.
