The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently unveiled Advanced Armoured Platforms (AAP), branded as Vikram VT-21, marking a significant step in India’s defence modernization and indigenization efforts. Developed by VRDE (Vehicle Research and Development Establishment) with production support from Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge, these platforms represent next-generation modular, multi-role combat vehicles.
Salient Features: AAP is available in both tracked and wheeled (8×8) variants, designed for diverse terrains including deserts, mountains, and water bodies. It features a crewless turret equipped with a 30 mm cannon, 7.62 mm machine gun, and Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM). The platform offers STANAG Level 4–5 protection, ensuring resistance against ballistic threats and IED blasts. Its amphibious capability, enabled by hydro-jet systems, allows operations across rivers and lakes. Currently, about 65% indigenous content is used, with a target of 90%.
