TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES - 84Top of FormTop of FormBottom of FormTop of FormBottom of FormTop of Form
1. India is facing a 35% rainfall deficit. Does this make monsoon a national security issue?
Answer: Yes, in a broad sense it does. The monsoon affects agriculture, food production, rural incomes, water availability and inflation. A weak monsoon can reduce crop yields, increase food prices and affect economic growth. Since millions of farmers depend on rainfall, climate variability directly impacts livelihoods and social stability. However, the long-term solution is not to depend entirely on rainfall. India should invest in irrigation, drought-resistant crops, water conservation and climate-resilient agriculture. National security today includes food security and water security, and the monsoon is closely linked to both.
