1. How does the AAP defection issue reflect the weakness of the anti-defection law?
The AAP defection issue shows that the anti-defection law still has loopholes. The Tenth Schedule was made to stop political instability and opportunistic switching of parties. However, disputes over “merger”, “split”, and Speaker’s decision often create confusion. In my view, the real issue is not only legality but also political morality. When elected representatives change sides, voters feel betrayed because they voted for a party and its ideology. The law should be clearer, faster, and more impartial. Strong democracy needs both legal discipline and ethical conduct by political leaders.
