TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 224
Q1. An Indian sailor was reportedly killed in an attack near the Strait of Hormuz. How should India protect its citizens and economic interests without becoming involved in the Iran–US conflict?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, India's first responsibility is to protect its citizens and maintain secure international trade. The Strait of Hormuz is important for India's energy imports and commercial shipping. India should strengthen maritime surveillance, issue timely safety advisories and coordinate with Oman and other regional countries. Affected families must receive consular assistance and appropriate support. Diplomatically, India should call for restraint, freedom of navigation and peaceful negotiations. However, India should avoid unnecessary military involvement that could widen the conflict. My view is that strategic autonomy means actively protecting national interests while maintaining diplomatic relationships with competing powers. India's response should combine humanitarian responsibility, maritime preparedness and constructive diplomacy.
Q2. The Indian Navy reportedly rescued Iranian sailors from pirates near Somalia. Does this demonstrate that India is becoming a security provider in the Indian Ocean?
